Free online lessons are available online the click of a button. Some sites will try to sell you more advanced lessons. But the free lessons will teach you enough to have fun playing. There are also enough sites that you can pick the one that suits you best, and choose the kind of music you want to learn.

Nowadays you don't need to read music to play the guitar. There's a system called tabs, which is much easier. It consists of a picture of five parallel lines that represent the guitar strings. A number will appear on the line representing the string you play. The number will tell you which fret to put your finger on. You'll get used to it very quickly; it's a far cry from Every Good Boy Does Fine.

Chords are the backbone of guitar playing, so you'll want to learn a lot of them. The internet is a good resource that's free for chords. It's easily searchable and will show you lots of variations.
