Guitar Practice - Revealed At Last- Whether You Should Practice Guitar With Effects or Not! by Gen Wright
One of the fun and exciting things that you can do while learning to play the guitar is to purchase an effects pedal or effects unit. Guitar effects can come in many shapes and sizes. There are the ever popular stomp box units to full-sized rack effects. Guitar effects such as delays, chorus, reverb, and the ever popular distortion will allow your guitar to sonically sound extremely rich, however, it can sometimes be challenging to know if and when to guitar practice with or without effects.
Let's take a look at some common sense guidelines when practicing your guitar with or without guitar effects.
1. Always practice the guitar without effects.
2. Always practice the guitar with effects.
3. Co-dependant guitar effects playing.
1. Always practice the guitar without effects: When practicing the guitar, it's very important to practice your instrument without effects. Playing only with guitar effects can hide your true technical skills when playing the guitar. For example, if you're practicing some scales with distortion, it can be easy to sound lightning fast on your guitar. However, take the distortion away, and you will quickly discover how technically proficient you really are at playing your guitar scales. So what do you do? Turn all effects off and practice your guitar scales with no effects. Having a clean dry sound will allow your ears to pick up every mistake you make when practicing. Guitar Practice without effects will also make it easier to correct your fingering and technique.
2. Always practice the guitar with effects: Practice your guitar without effects until you sound technically proficient when playing chords or scales. Now, you are now ready to add effects to your guitar playing. Using effects while playing your guitar before may have masked technical errors in your playing, however, you will now sound even better on the guitar, and not limited to playing only with effects. Your ability and creativity when playing with effects will increase if you've taken the time to practice guitar without effects. Guitar effects such as delay will sound crisper and cleaner and in control. If you find that you use guitar effects quite often you will still want to ensure that you have practice times without effects. Some songs with guitar effects require practice, especially, if the song you are learning has distortion or delay in it.
3. Co-dependant guitar effects playing: One way to know if you have developed a co-dependency to using guitar effects is to play your guitar in a live setting without any guitar effects. When playing live guitar without any effects, you will quickly find out how technically proficient your playing is with or without effects. If you find that you are getting frustrated playing live without effects; I would strongly urge you to practice your guitar without effects. This will allow you to become a better guitar player. If you're a guitar player who currently doesn't have any guitar effects; know that when you begin playing with effects, you will have opened a Pandora's box of fun and excitement on the guitar like no other.
